Marienkapelle
Nestled on the banks of the Rhine at kilometre 714, the late Gothic St. Mary’s Chapel (Marienkapelle) in Monheim am Rhein stands as one of the oldest pilgrimage chapels in the Archdiocese of Cologne.
As early as the 12th century, a holy house with an image of the Virgin Mary was erected here, inspired by the miraculous conditions of the current. In 1418, Rhine boatmen constructed a wooden chapel, which was later replaced by a stone building in 1514. A jetty was also constructed to accommodate a Rhine barge, enabling believers from the left bank to visit the chapel and venerate its revered image of the Virgin Mary. Notably, in 1553, Cologne councillor Hermann von Weinsberg documented that many people sought solace at the chapel during the plague.
Today, the Marienkapelle am Rhein e.V. association takes care of the preservation and maintenance of the Marienkapelle and organises regular free concerts, the proceeds of which go towards the restoration of the Marienkapelle.

Villa am Greisbachsee
The formerly vacant house between Monheim and Baumberg was built in the 1950s on the banks of the Greisbachsee lake and has recently been made available to the Monheim Triennale as a residency. In the fall of 2023, the house was renovated and now serves as a residence for the international artists who come to Monheim am Rhein.
Festival director Reiner Michalke: ”We are very happy to have the ‘Villa’ as a venue for artistic work for the first time. The villa is an ideal location for accommodating musicians, as it is both close to the city center and secluded by the lake. We now have the opportunity to invite international guests over a longer period of time and thus contribute to the further development of Monheim as a city of culture.“
In regular house concerts and artist talks, artists give the audience an insight into their practice. Previous guests have included Peter Evans with his trio, Anushka Chkheidze, Shannon Barnett, Fred Frith, Muqata’a, Rojin Sharafi and Stefan Schneider Monti.
