Uncertain Future

We are constantly receiving inquiries from Germany and abroad regarding the continuation of the Monheim Triennale. First of all: the future of the Monheim Triennale is uncertain. Here is a summary of the current status:
After the last “The Festival” of the Monheim Triennale II, local elections were held in Monheim am Rhein in September 2025. In this election, the independent candidate Sonja Wienecke was elected mayor. The former mayor, Daniel Zimmermann, did not stand for re-election.
In December 2025, Reiner Michalke was dismissed as artistic director and his managing director contract was terminated.
In the meantime, the mayor asked Reiner Michalke and his team to present a concept for a streamlined Monheim Triennale. Such a concept now exists under the name “Monheim Academy,” a further development of the “The Prequel” format. The mayor has submitted this concept to the party alliance supporting her for a decision. Here is an official statement from the city (translated by us):
“The city administration expressly recognizes the cultural value of the Monheim Triennale and appreciates the good integration of the urban society in recent years. The Triennale has provided lasting impetus through the broad participation of various actors. However, continuing it in its current form would involve considerable financial expenditure.
In view of the current budgetary situation, alternative options are being discussed with an open mind.”
We do not know when a decision will be made. We will provide information as soon as we have any news.
In the meantime, we invite you to visit our website. Under the heading „Artists“, we have listed the names of all 183 artists who have visited Monheim since 2020 as part of the Triennale. Particularly impressive is the list of musicians who have been invited by our Signature Artists to participate in their projects.
