“How can you rethink folk music for the future or for the present from a different place?” This is how the Iranian-born, Vienna-based electronic musician frames the core idea of her project. For her, dealing with musical traditions also has a social function, because it brings people together. Community and the coming together of people are central themes in Sharafi’s compositions, for which she collaborates with various artists and musicians.

Project HUUUM
Rojin Sharafi (electr, synth), Omid Darvish (voc), Ya-Nung Huang (suona), Louis Sanou (djembé, dun dun)

HUUUM is synonymous with synthesis, openness, substance and zealous unyieldingness. The project fuses Iranian vocals with free jazz, ambient and electronic beats to create a new kind of dance music. HUUM is the definitive answer to the dance ban in Iran. It is the domain of the unknown, the unpractised and the brazen that surrounds this project, and nothing can stop it. Rojin Sharafi (electronics, synthesiser, drum machine) plays with Omid Darvish (vocals, FX), Ya-Nung Huang (suona) and Louis Sanou (djembe, dun dun).
