Fred Frith celebrates his 75th birthday in 2024. To mark the occasion, we have invited him to a talk concert at the Villa am Greisbachsee. Due to a festival organized in his honour (14 - 16 October 2024) in Cologne’s Stadtgarten, he is staying in the region and will be coming to Monheim the day before, on Sunday, 13 October at 1 pm.

Frith began his career in 1968 as a rock musician and co-founder of the Henry Cow collective, a kind of musicians’ commune. Here, agitational music in the tradition of Hanns Eisler met jazz rock, free improvisation and atonal pop. Since his solo debut - the “Guitar Solos” published in 1974 - he has constantly expanded and re-tested his musical vocabulary and his instrumental voice.

Frith’s music lives above all in the collective and also contains a brute punk energy that characterized his New York band Massacre, for example. He taught for twenty years at Mills College in Oakland, California, the epicenter of experimental music, and led the improvisation master’s program with Alfred Zimmerlin at the Music Academy in Basel. He is currently a visiting professor at the Univsersidad Austral in Valdivia, Chile, where he is helping to found a new school for music and sound art.

We look forward to welcoming Fred Frith to the Villa am Greisbachsee on October 13 at 1 pm in conversation with Cologne-based freelance journalist Ilka Geyer. Admission is free, but registration is required at info@monheim-triennale.de for reasons of space.
