Music in the tradition of New Orleans brass bands

Brass class of the music school and the Peter Ustinov Comprehensive School / Monheim Music School
Directors: Richard Brenner, Achim Tang

Shannon Barnett: trombone

The Monheim music school offers musical specialisms in collaboration with the city’s secondary schools. At the Peter Ustinov Comprehensive School, these are the ‘brass classes’, in which pupils learn wind instruments and can make music together directly in an ensemble.

For the Monheim Triennale, signature artist Shannon Barnett visits a wind class from the sixth year. She brings music from the brass band tradition from the south of the USA, works with the children on the subject of improvisation and develops a performance for The Festival together with them.

At the Peter Ustinov Comprehensive School, the fifth and sixth year classes are run as “wind classes”: all children receive instrumental lessons from teachers at the Monheim Music School on a wind instrument of their choice.

At the same time, they make music together as an ensemble from the very beginning, with the support of the school’s music teachers and the music school, and Signature Artist Shannon Barnett visits one of these sixth-grade wind classes for the Monheim Triennale. She brings music from the brass band tradition from the south of the USA, works with the children on the subject of improvisation and develops a performance for The Festival together with them.
