Ava Mendoza's concert was one of the many highlights of The Prequel, the workshop edition of the Monheim Triennale.. This year, the celebrated electric guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer from New York City will present a special "Signature" project in Monheim: her first collaboration with video and light artist Sue Slagle aka SUE-C. (World premiere).
The guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer is highly praised especially for her technique and instinctive playing. Ava Mendoza's music, as Fred Frith describes her in his contribution to the Monheim Papers is "physical, ecstatic, driven. When you watch her play, you are mesmerised." Mendoza leads the art rock band “Unnatural Ways” and composes experimental film music. As a solo artist, she performs her own pieces, commissioned works (e.g. for John Zorn) and music by contemporary composers. She is "a master of the contemporary guitar", according to "Premier Guitar" magazine. Her latest album "New Spells" was released in February. Wire magazine dedicated its "Invisible Jukebox" section to her in June.
Sue Slagle aka SUE-C is a video and light artist who works in worldwide projects at the intersection of creative coding and live performance. Her hybrid multimedia installations challenge the norms of photography, video and technology. She was awarded the Creative Capital Award in 2020, is a MacDowell Fellow and teaches at George Mason University. She has worked with with Negativland, Morton Subotnick, Luc Ferrari, and Laetitia Sonami among others.
